The Technology Behind the Defiance Subwoofer

Keith Dowd, Paradigm’s Director of US Sales, said it best when he was quoted for the press release for the Defiance series, “When bass is properly reproduced, it is the foundation in music and movie soundtracks. It’s easy to design a subwoofer that makes a lot of noise, but a subwoofer with vanishingly low distortion that sounds as good as a high-performance speaker can only come from a company that knows how to design and build high-performance speakers.”
Here is what makes the Defiance Subwoofer amazing:

1.    Active Ridge Technology (ART) Surrounds. ART is a uniquely engineered surround design that allows the driver to move faster and farther. When you look at a Defiance Sub, you see what looks like the edge of a paper plate around the driver, and this is part of the ART technology. This patented driver design is “over-molded,” meaning these items are fused (not glued) to the cone to allow for the farthest possible throw without distortion or destruction. The Defiance Subs measured a 3dB gain in output, with a 50% reduction in audible distortion. Yes, that’s right; we upped the output while significantly reducing the distortion. One Defiance sub produces the same output as two subs from other brands.

2.    Built-in ARC Technology. With this technology, you can shape the bass to fit your space. This technology is controlled via a smartphone app (iOs and Android). ARC measures your area, compares it to lab standard responses, and instantly removes performance-robbing anomalies resulting in an accurately rendered deep bass.

3.    Subwoofer App Control. This app simplifies set up and tuning, controlling volume, low-pass filter, phase, room gain, and much more. There are even three present listening modes, and you can turn off ARC all in this powerful app.

4.    Wireless Capabilities (Optional). All the new Defiance subwoofers (expect the V8) can benefit from the Defiance Wireless Transmitter System. The transmitter and receiver modules connect easily and allow users greater placement options for a subwoofer.

5.    Ported on the Bottom. This makes the subwoofer easily adaptable to most configurations. The subwoofer can be put in a cabinet or set on the floor – whichever fits your design. This ported design also allows for better airflow as well make the sub more adaptable to fit many configurations.

Defiance V Series is a budget-conscious choice for big bass. Defiance X Series is Crafted in Canada for truly huge high-performance bass. Whichever one is right for you, Defiance subs are all bass, no gimmicks.

How Do You Get Great Sound Without Disrupting the Décor of the Room?

Your home is decorated, and now it’s time to add the home theater system of your dreams to the living room television, but space is a challenge. You have your receiver and amplifier, but the room is just not big enough for floor standing speakers. Also, your significant other does not want “ugly speakers” as part of the decor. For any audiophile that cohabits with a non-audiophile, getting the sound you want that the decorator in the family likes is a challenge. There is hope. If you are struggling to find a compromise on your home theater with your significant other, here are three ways to overcome the standard objections to adding a sound system to a display.

1. Do we need speakers? We purchased a new TV. Today the speakers on the new televisions are on the back of the display. This means, when they are mounted on the wall, which the typical way to put the tv in the living room, the speaker sends the sound to a wall, then it bounces off. The result – horrible sound. A quality speaker designed to accompany the displays will redirect the sound while improving the quality and the experience of your new television.

2. I do not want a speaker sitting on the table under the TV or around the room. Getting the ok to rest a speaker on a piece of furniture or have floor standing speakers around a small living room can bring on harsh words. Avoid this conversation by purchasing speakers that blend seamlessly with the display. Décor speakers are available in both horizontal/sound bar and side-mounted / vertical configurations. Speakers can be combined to create a slim, elegant, high-performance audio system that is customized to the exact height and length of any wall-mounted, flat panel television. This is a custom-built speaker that will seamlessly blend with your display to not take away from the aesthetics of the room.

3. We cannot have true surround sound, so why bother? While surround sound may not be possible, improving the sound from your television with a Décor speaker is the perfect solution. The Décor line of speakers come in one, two, or three channel specs giving you the flexibility to use any size television and match it with high-performance Paradigm home theater audio, without worrying about mismatched aesthetics or poorly blended sound.

With these tips, you should be able to come to a compromise on getting the quality sound you want in a sound system that does not disrupt the look of your living room. See our full Décor line on our website to see all the options available.

Persona Praise Continues...

James Larson, of Audioholics writes: "The midrange frequencies of the 5F speakers are easily the best of any speaker I have had in my home thus far. I cannot imagine a loudspeaker with more midrange clarity; in this range the Persona 5F were superb. The bass felt natural and not boosted or otherwise disconnected from the rest of the sound. It was powerful when it needed to be and extended quite deeply for a tower speaker of its size. The dispersion is wide and uniform, so they will have very good coverage across a large listening area instead of a single ‘sweet spot.’ The Persona 5F speakers have enough dynamic range to handle a good sized room too. They can get loud and have no problems doing so, and their imaging and soundstage is also terrific."

Sound & Vision Gives the Persona 3F System 5 Stars Across the Board!

The stellar reviews keep rolling in!

"What can I say? There are damn few speaker systems that I’d consider selling my children—or myself—for medical experiments to acquire. But the Persona 3F and the rest of the speakers in this Paradigm Persona system are so astounding, so unequivocally brilliant in their performance that they will convince your ears that they don’t exist, despite what your eyes will try to tell you."

"Paradigm set out to create the best, state-of-the-Paradigm-art speakers the company has ever produced, bringing together top-notch cabinet construction and finishing capabilities and advanced driver technologies in hopes of achieving something greater than the sum of its already great parts. They’ve succeeded."

Persona 9H Labelled a "World Class Speaker" by TONEAudio

Fantastic feedback from the pros at TONEAudio:

"The new Persona 9H from Paradigm Speakers f***ing rocks! You COULD drop a hundred grand on a pair of Wilsons, YG's or Magicos, (and none of these choices have ...powered woofers with built in) or you can spend $35,000 on a pair of Paradigms and the other $65,000 traveling all over the world for about three months buying cool records. This is a world class speaker folks. Powered by a compliment of Foundation series components from Audio Research Corporation, the entire system with a great turntable still won't cost you as much as a pair of boutique-y speakers."

Paradigm PW Amp Review: This DTS Play-Fi Amplifier Will Bring Out the Best from Your Speakers

"There’s no need to mince words. Hands down the total performance of the PW Amp has to be heard to be believed. The PW Amp with ARC is nothing short of magical and brought peak performance out of each setup I used it in."

"Paradigm’s PW Amp does something that the competition just can’t: deliver hi-res audio streaming to your speaker setup that compensates for the anomalies produced by your room-speaker interactions. Whether it’s a standalone system or a whole-home audio solution with multiple zones, you’ll be hard pressed to find a solution that makes your setup achieve its full potential. In fact, I liked the PW Amp so much that it’s going to find a permanent place in my home setup. I can’t think of a better recommendation than that."

Persona 7F Named as Speaker this Reviewer would Buy, Sound Unheard

"I’d love to see the stats: How many audiophiles in 2016 bought parts of their system -- or their entire system -- online or over the phone, without ever having heard the component(s)? I know from the letters I receive that many of you do, if only out of necessity. The number of dealers stocking high-end audio gear has shrunk over the years, and sometimes it’s just not feasible to hear the component you’re considering buying before you actually buy it. And comparing two different brands side by side -- the two specific brands you’re most interested in -- is often next to impossible. Many dealers carry only a few brands, and typically complementary rather than competing brands."

"The speakers I recommend are the new Paradigm Persona 7F ($25,000 USD per pair), the next-to-top model of the Persona line. The very top Persona is the 9H, which has an active bass section with four 8.5” woofers. The fully passive 7F has a 1” beryllium-dome tweeter and, surprisingly, a 7” beryllium-cone midrange. The bass range is handled by two 8.5” woofers -- half the number in the 9H -- that must be powered by your own amplifier. Although I love the thought of the active bass in the 9H, a pair of them costs $10,000 more and I suspect that the 7F would produce plenty of low end for most folks in most rooms. Plus, a lot of people like the more conventional passive approach, because that’s what they’re used to. And that’s OK. Being a large three-way speaker, the 7F should be able to handle practically anything you throw at it, including doing double duty with movies and music. I hear that you can get them in blue -- Aria Metallic Blue, to be specific. That’s what I’d choose."

"Music to my ears" - Mark Henninger's Review of the Paradigm PW Amp

We're excited to share this review of the Paradigm PW Amp, from AVS Forum's Mark Henninger.

“The Paradigm PW Amp was music to my ears… Thanks to the combined power of DTS Play-Fi and ARC software, the feature set of the Paradigm PW Amp is remarkably deep."
"I can't commend Paradigm enough for providing the flexibility in bass management and room EQ that ARC affords; this is the only networked amp I am familiar with that offers such sophistication, which is crucial if you want to achieve true high-fidelity. I also applaud the company's choice to go with DTS Play-Fi since that ecosystem encompasses products from many companies, unlike the proprietary systems offered by some other vendors."

Persona, our new flagship lineup, debuted at CEDIA 2016, to rave reviews!

“…[Y]ou want to experience these speakers, for they have the power to evoke emotions like nothing I have ever heard before. Loud surround is simple. Imaging and transformational sound is not.” - Heather L. Sidorowicz, ResidentialSystems.com

I had a chance to listen to some tracks through a pair of Persona 9H’s, including Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Tin Pan Alley,” Peter Gabriel’s “Mercy Street,” and Daft Punk’s “Giorgio by Moroder.” The speakers handled the challenges of the acoustically difficult meeting room with aplomb. ARC smoothed out the bass response from the two speakers, and with a total of eight 8.5-inch differential-drive woofers pumping the air, they had plenty of depth and impact. Imaging was as good as it gets, which is usually the case with well-designed top-tier speakers.” - Mark Henninger, AVSForum.com

We quickly realized that these are speakers we'd want to take a closer listen to in our own listening space.” - Gene DellaSala, Audioholics.com

“I enjoyed a fantastic demo that featured some of the most detailed recordings I’ve heard. The transparency and resolution seemed almost without limit. The goal of Paradigm’s five-year development was to minimize distortion. To my ears, they’ve eliminated it. I look forward to seeing these speakers measured because they presented nothing but clean neutral sound.” - Christian Eberle, Hometheaterhifi.com

Subwoofers, Part 4: Please enjoy responsibly: With high power comes deep bass.

Power. Some of us have it. We all want it. When we finally get some, we always want more, don't we? What are we talking about here? Subwoofers. Bass. Big, deep, omnidirectional, stomach-rumbling low frequencies. The only way to achieve it, is to have the power it takes to make it.

We're talking about subwoofer amplification, the clean, constant power that relentlessly moves the cone and the motor on the voice coil of the speaker we love. At Paradigm, we want to give you the power (in every sense of the word) to indulge your deepest-downest, lowest bass fantasies and desires.

Hit the jump to get a little subwoofer refresher, which will make it clear how we believe power fits into the subwoofer puzzle. We’ll dish a little about the innovation we came up with to deliver more extreme subwoofer power, more efficiently, than practically anyone out there.

Subwoofers, Part 3: Rubik's Cube of Bass

Bass is the easy part, isn't it? Just move a big driver, and like magic: low frequencies come out. That equation was fine for big 80s boomboxes, but it doesn't explain serious bass response and why it's important for you and for your sound system.

At Paradigm, we have our own ideas about bass. We've studied the issue for over 30 years. We've come up with some improvements, defeating many of the issues that get in the way of producing low frequency response. And we've come up with some ways to improve on those improvements using better technology both inside the subwoofer enclosure, and out.

So you know we make subwoofers for every application, now hit the jump to find out how Paradigm bass is different from other species of bass.

"It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen and it definitely looks like it means business..." - Carlo Lo Raso

We are pleased to share a fantastic review of the Paradigm Prestige 2000SW that was just published!

"A well designed and very attractive looking sealed subwoofer with an imposing 15-inch aluminum driver and a 2000-watt class D amplifier, the 2000SW is looking to be more than just a generic thumping black box in your living room. The addition of PBK also attempts to add a new level of integration and more consistent sound quality to the mix."

"The overall sound quality coming from the Paradigm subwoofer was excellent, particularly with music. It reproduced detailed notes and bass lines with resounding clarity and an admirable lack of distortion. For all practical purposes, one of the 2000SW subwoofers was able to produce more than enough output to energize my room, pretty effortlessly, down to just about 20 Hz before a fairly steep roll off of the signal. Although I’ve had subwoofers that have played flat down to about 10 Hz in this room, very few of them have sounded as clean as this Paradigm has in its given operating range." —Carlo Lo Raso

Subwoofers, Part 2: ALL OUR BASS ARE BELONG TO YOU

How important is a subwoofer? Without a subwoofer, you have no Jaco Pastorius or Bootsie Collins, no exploding Death Star, and no cello concerto. So, for a full-spectrum dynamic audio experience, you really need to include a subwoofer in your listening plans.

We love bass. We live for the lows. Being moved by big bass is fun. It gets everyone onto the dance floor (even if the dance floor is your living room) and it nails you to your seat during a movie. You need a sub.

Don't have a sub yet? Don't think you have the room, worried about what the neighbors will think, satisfied with just your mids and highs? Take the jump and we'll show you three compact subwoofers made especially to fit the bass needs of smaller rooms and apartments, and more.

Subwoofers, Part 1: You need a better reason to come back to our Blog.

We recently used this blog to introduce you to Paradigm's new Prestige Series of high-powered subwoofers. You know: "Louder. Lower frequency. Lower distortion. Gut-wrenching power!"

Since then, this blog has been one big award and one great review after another. Hey, we're tooting our own X-PAL Tweeters here, so to speak. But we'd understand if you're beginning to feel that our bragging is getting dry.

How about some information you can really use? Maybe even an opportunity to -- most important -- learn something that helps you get better performance from your audio equipment? That's exactly what we've been thinking, too.

Click the jump to find out what we have in store for you now, and what you can do to be sure you don't miss any upcoming posts.
