Paradigm Announces New Division: Paradigm Shift

Last week at CES 2011 in Las Vegas we announced a new division to the company "Paradigm Shift". With four product categories: Powered Speakers, Earbuds, Headphones and Gaming Headsets, Shift's goal is to broaden Paradigm's appeal to the next generation of listeners as well as to provide mobile solutions to current Paradigm customers through a line of personal audio products.

"To get an idea of the Millenia One’s performance, I first listened to a stereo pair without the aid of a subwoofer. As expected, they didn’t extend particularly low in the bass, but I was surprised at how big and powerful they did sound. Nils Lofgren’s guitar on "Keith Don’t Go," from Acoustic Live (CD, Vision 820761101422), was reproduced with a thrilling explosiveness. There was a good bit of weight behind the resonance of the guitar, and the strings had lightning-fast speed. About three minutes into this track, when things really get going, there was a natural richness to the sound, but the guitar never lost its tightly controlled character."

Signature S6 v.3: Blows its Highly-Respected Older Bigger Brother out of the Water!

Roger Kanno, associate editor of the SoundStage! Network is a long-time owner of a pair of Paradigm Reference Signature S8 v.2's and is never shy to share his admiration for their abilities.

But when we came out of with version three of the Signature series, we were convinced that the S8's new younger sibling, (the Signature S6 v.3) would blow the old S8 v.2's out of the water!

Roger was the perfect candidate to accept the challenge - and he did. So we shipped him a pair for him to judge them fairly for himself. After much torture and intense audiophile testing, SoundStage! Xperience has published Roger's review of the Signature S6 v.3 and we are proud to say... WE WERE RIGHT!

Voices were presented with the utmost clarity, accompanied by crisp highs and an accurate and impressively punchy lower end. "I could hear not only the spatter of water hitting the ground, but could tell by the smacking sounds that the surface it was striking was one of marble or concrete, even though I couldn't see it. This kind of textured details was also present when I listened to the rake being dragged through the grass: I could hear the metallic tinniness of the rake's teeth, indicating that the grass was quite short, though I couldn't actually see the grass. It is these sorts of details that help paint a picture in the mind and add to a film's atmosphere. The entire SE system painted those pictures brilliantly."

The Paradigms were able to create a holistic soundstage filled with detail and nuance."

Signature S6 v.3 System Wins SoundStage! "Reviewers' Choice" Award

Roger Kanno of the SoundStage! Network, reviewed the Paradigm Reference Signature S6 system, (including Signature S6, C3, ADP3, SUB 1 and PBK) and called it "...an absolutely stellar combination of loudspeakers."  In fact, SoundStage! liked this system so much, they announced it winner of the "Reviewers' Choice" award!

"For both movies and music, each component of the Signature v.3 system performed flawlessly. The S6 v.3's were spectacular, whether on their own or as part of a 5.1-channel system. Some manufacturers' center and surround models seem afterthoughts, but the C3 v.3 and ADP3 v.3 matched the performance of the incredible S6 v.3 note for note. Add to all this a truly world-class subwoofer in the SUB 1, which includes Paradigm's sophisticated PBK-1 room-correction system, and it's hard to imagine a better home-theater speaker system at any price."

"Reference Status" says AVForums.com after reviewing our prestigious Signature SUB 1

Russell Williams of AVForums.com in the UK reviewed the Paradigm Reference Signature SUB 1 and it blew him away - (almost) literally.

 "Reference Status. There, I said it. You can't mark it down for being hard to move because so is my wife and I still keep her about. Like the wife, in just about every other respect, it's just so damn easy to live with. Whereas other subs may have you fiddling about with separate movie and music settings to bypass their deficiencies, you just plug the Sub 1 in, tune it once, put the microphones away and sit grinning like a nun who's found the soap; for hours on end."

All jokes aside, Williams then went on to say, "I never thought that movies needed a bit more bass or that music sounds a little bloated – It just did accurate bass, as loud or low as you could want, and then stopped exactly when it wasn't being asked to anymore. It never drew attention to itself in an unpleasant way; it turns itself on and off without missing the beginning of an effect; and looks gorgeous in any front room."

Paradigm & Anthem show off their Flagship Pieces in this Parisian themed Custom Home Theater

Award-winning Chicago Interior Designer John Cannon designed a home theater and entertainment zone with hints of an antique Parisian bar decorated with Art-Deco details. Incorporated in the 'zone' was a breathtaking home cinema with Paradigm & Anthem flagship installation by George Georgiou of Cinetec Audio Video Design Centers in Palos Hills, IL.

Georgiou chose to deck out the theater in the Paradigm Reference Signature line because as he puts it...

"Paradigm has, at every price point, a speaker that competes with the best of the best in the world... so when I'm deciding which speaker we're going to use in a particular room, I look at the capabilities of each speaker in [Paradigm's] catalog and decide what's going to eb best for the project depending on a budget. With this room, we needed world-class performance, and so we went with S8. I don't know that there's a better speaker for the money."

At the front of the room Georgiou used a pair of S8's and a C5 center channel. However, at the rear of the room, Georgiou wanted to match the S8 & C5 sonically but he couldn't use traditional in-walls in the curved wall. "As good as the guys at Paradigm are, they don't make curved back boxes," he says. But Georgiou found the perfect solution using four Signature W5 speakers, a thing on-wall speaker.

Also incorporated in the theater is Anthem Statement electronics including the award-winning D2v audio/video processor as well as P2 & P5 amplifiers. The curved rear wall also posed some serious acoustical challenges but Georgiou used ARC Anthem room correction kit included with the D2v to tame the sound field.

Dean Seislove, of Positive Feedback reviewed the Paradigm Reference Studio 20's and the Seismic 110 and couldn't get enough of this combo...

About the Seismic 110, Dean commented that "Granted, the Seismic 110 (which reminds me either of a squatty black bulldog or an old fashioned beer keg, I can't decide which) has a lot more fun loosening floorboards... I never once felt like the bass was crowding me out of my chair, if you know what I mean."

"After setting these up outside and getting the balance adjusted where they were the same volume at my primary listening area on my patio, I was truly blown away by their sound."

Reference Signature SUB 2 Rocks The Bristol Show

Paradigm & Anthem made an appearance at The Bristol Show, Bristol UK, February 26th - 28th.  We showed off Paradigm's new Reference Signature SUB 2 in our demo room and boy did we rock it! - and the feedback was incredible. Well not that there was feedback per say, but you get what we're saying!  Check out a few of the quotes below to see the post-show gossip in some of the UK forums...

Half the Price or Less: Paradigm Signature S2 Competes with the Best!

 

On February 1st Jeff Fritz of Ultra Audio wrote an opinion piece called "How Close Can I Get for Half the Price or Less?" in response to a common misconception in the audiophile world that the more you spend, the better the gear.  

"Audiophiles will sometimes spend what they feel they must spend because they assume that, in high-end audio, the ratio of price to performance is a linear one.  But if your breadth of experience is broad enough, you'll surely have learned that spending more doesn't always buy more performance.", said Fritz.

"I often see audiophiles decide how much they're going to spend on a stereo component before they've even considered what they need to spend to meet their goals.  The problem with this predetermined approach is one of a lack of context: The shoppers simply can't determine relative value without a more informed knowledge of what's available", he continued.

And so, Fritz decided to take it upon himself to answer his own question, just how close to the best could he get for half the price or less?  His goal - $10,000/pair maximum.  And so he went to work...

 On March 1st, just 28 days later, Jeff published his results.  And what brand did he choose to put to the test?  None other than Paradigm!  More specifically the Paradigm Reference Signature S2 v.3's in Piano Black at $2898/pair, (well under the $10,000/pair mark!), couple with our new ground-breaking bass pumper, the Paradigm Reference Signature SUB 2.

And what were the results?   Check out a few statements from Jeff's review...

Highs

"The Reference Signature S2 v.3 could compete in the highs with virtually anything I've heard at any price. It was neutral and extended, clean and precise, without being harsh or brittle. And I threw some hard tests at it."

Lows

"The bottom line is that Paradigm has optimized the drivers in the S2 v.3 for the clean, loud and linear reproduction of sound.  When you have the resources of a Paradigm, in terms of both technical talent and manufacturing efiiciency and capability, you have some strong advantages.  The drivers in the S2 v.3, it seems to me, would be right at home in products costing many times as much."

Conclusion

"There's no doubt that a system like the Paradigm Reference Signature S2 v.3 and Sub 2 can compete with many speakers costing twice or thrice as much -- or more. It will have the frequency extension in both the highs and lows to match any of them. It also can make magic between those frequency extremes that will compete with almost all, and destroy many, speakers with price tags dearer than ten grand. In fact, around the Paradigm's price range, I don't know of a better alternative.  The best speakers I've review that compete price-wise, such as Thiel's CS2.4SE, just don't have the ability to reproduce large-scale music with the sheer oomph of this Paradigm pairing. Even speakers with such excellent pedigrees as the WIlson Audio Specialties WATT/Puppy 8 and the YG Acoustics Kipod, both of which I've very positively reviewed, don't pay as low'n'loud as the Paradigm combo, nor do they outpace the S2 v.3s in the super-high frequencies.  The Paradigms compete commendably with products that they would not usually be compared with in a retail store."

First Listen continued! Chris Martens of AVguide finishes his review of the SE Series

On January 28th we blogged about Chris Martens and his exciting "First Listen" piece on the SE Series in The Perfect Vision...  Well, Chris published his review of the oh so popular lifestyle series from Paradigm and it sounds to us like his last listen was as good as the first!

Appropriately titled "Greater Than the Sum of its Parts", Martens review of the SE system was comprehensive.  Chris placed emphasis on the dollar value as well as the aptitude of the midrange.  But more importantly, the SE Series was stamped recommended products of 2010!

"Another strength involves the Special Editions' ability to produce very large soundstages and to create tightly focused sonic images within those stages-images that effortlessly break free from the speaker enclosures to fill the room with sound.  In fact, in terms of three-dimensionality, imaging, and soundstaging, the Special Editions are one of Paradigm's better efforts to date", said Martens who had an array of positive things to say about his system.

Chris summarized his opinion by stating "... this system offers delightful sound quality at a very accessible price, while offering visually pleasing cabinetry that hits that "just right" size ..."
